Waste Management's Tontitown Landfill operates under the strict regulations of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Also located at the Tontitown facility is Waste Management's Northwest Arkansas Hauling Company and yard waste composting center.

The Tontitown Landfill consists of a Class 1 and Class 4 landfill. The Class 1 municipal solid waste landfill is permitted to accept non-hazardous household, commercial and industrial waste. Its adjacent Class 4 landfill accepts construction and demolition debris (wood, metal, roofing debris, stumps, rocks, etc.) and non-contaminated soils. The landfill does not accept hazardous, radioactive, or liquid wastes.

The Tontitown Landfill is the only landfill in Northwest Arkansas serving residential, municipal and commercial customers. It currently accepts more than 1,200 tons of trash a day. There are 24 Class 1 landfills in Arkansas that are permitted to accept municipal solid waste; Waste Management subsidiaries operate four of these, including the Tontitown Landfill.

Waste Management's Tontitown Landfill and Northwest Arkansas Hauling Company are economically beneficial for the community and its customers. Waste Management contributes more than $6.5 million each year to the local economy in salaries and local purchases. The company also pays more than $1.5 million a year in fees to local and state governments.

Northwest Arkansas has seen its population grow by more than 45 percent over the past decade. It is now the sixth fastest-growing region in America, with a 60 percent employment growth in the last decade. The Milken Institute recently ranked the Fayetteville, Springdale and Rogers Metropolitan Statistical Area as the nation's top performer in 2003 for job growth. This continued growth requires the appropriate infrastructure, including the ability to handle the increased volume of waste for the region.
