Economic Benefits
Arkansas' solid waste industry provides essential
services to residents and businesses within the state. These
services include refuse collection, transportation, recycling,
composting, waste disposal and waste-to-energy services.
Waste Management in Arkansas
There are 24 Class 1 landfills in Arkansas
that are permitted to accept municipal solid waste. Waste
Management subsidiaries operate four of these, including the
Tontitown Landfill, and employs more than 330 people statewide.
It also operates the Two Pine Landfill in Jacksonville, the
Jefferson County Landfill and the Ozark Ridge Landfill in
Yell County. Collectively, throughout Arkansas, Waste Management
serves more than 200,000 residents and businesses and contributes
more than $250,000 in financial and in-kind support to community
groups, organizations and foundations.
Waste Management in Tontitown
- Employs more than 65 local residents and operates 40+
trucks
- Contributes more than $6.5 million annually to the local
economy in payroll, local goods and services
- Pays more than $1.5 million a year in fees to local and
state governments
- Services the waste needs of more than 60,000 residential,
industrial and commercial customers
- Safely disposes of the majority of waste generated in
Benton, Madison and Washington Counties (the Tri-County
Solid Waste District projects that in 2005, these three
counties will generate nearly 476,000 tons of waste)
Recycling in Northwest Arkansas
Waste Management, through its subsidiary
Recycle America Alliance, provides curbside recycling services
for the City of Rogers, City of Springdale, City of Elkins
and the City of Farmington. Combined, Waste Management recycles
more than 9,000 tons a year, making it the biggest recycler
in Northwest Arkansas.
