Fayetteville Natural Heritage Association

Geographical Area to Benefit from the Project:

The area to be benefited by the proposed project would include Washington County and the City of Fayetteville.

Type of Project:

Pollution prevention/reduction and Environmental regulatory compliance/technical assistance

Project Description:

The City of Fayetteville is rapidly developing available land. Recently, the City acquired 67 acres of undeveloped oak/hickory upland woodlands adjacent to the City. The Fayetteville Natural Heritage Association pledged $300,000 to purchase a conservation easement from the City to ensure that the tract would be conserved for the citizens of Fayetteville.

The desirability of preserving this area is obvious, considering the loss of old-growth hardwood forests in Arkansas. However, conservation of the Mt. Sequoyah Woods will also help conserve air quality in the Fayetteville area, preserve wildlife habitat, and ensure natural green space for the study and appreciate of the unique environment of Northwest Arkansas.

Expected Environmental Benefits:

The environmental benefit of this project will be the enhanced conservation easement.
